Explore the Cimarrons
Answer the call from the mountains! On Wednesday, July 23rd, we’re taking on a journey through some of Colorado’s most iconic landscapes. Our expedition begins at the church. From there, we’ll follow County Road 10 to County Road 8 to Forest Service Road 858. We’ll pass through the ranches in what’s known as “millionaires valley” before climbing toward breathtaking views at Vista Point, see Chimney Rock and Courthouse Mountain, and stop at Deb’s Meadow, where the legendary True Grit shootout was filmed. We’ll go over Owl Creek Pass and down to Silver Jack Reservoir where we’ll have our lunch by the water.
Be sure to pack lunch and bring an outdoor chair or blanket since there aren’t any picnic tables. When it’s time to come home, the adventure concludes with a choice: take the familiar road back to Ridgway, forge a new path over to Highway 50 and down to Montrose, or spend a little more mountain time.
Please note: While the mountain roads are gravel and a bit rugged, they are easily managed by most vehicles with high clearance (4-wheel drive is not needed) and it will be about 25 miles each way and take 4-5 hours.
